Strategic Plan
2010-2011
Mission: AzPANA serves as the perianesthesia resource to advance nursing
practice within the community, through professional and educational
opportunities.
Strategies indicate how AzPANA will organize, focus, and expend its resources and actions to maximize its effectiveness and efficiency in achieving the goals.
Milestones are used to determine the overall progress toward a goal. They indicate how close AzPANA is to achieving a goal as it executes the individual strategies for each goal.
- AzPANA’s strategic plan is developed using ASPAN prototype.
Goal A: AzPANA will provide its membership current, readily accessible educational opportunities related to perianesthesia nursing.
Milestones:
- Provided one successful half day seminar complimentary to AzPANA members.
- Provided two successful full day conferences.
- Provided one ASPAN conference in Tucson (January 2010).
- Provided two certification review courses at no cost.
- Established electronic notification of seminars to members.
- Brochures available on line.
Strategies:
A1. Provide minimum of 2 full day AzPANA conferences this fiscal year, one to highlight
AzPANA’s 30th anniversary.
A2. Host one ASPAN seminar per calendar year.
A3. Continue to attract other specialties whose patients receive anesthesia or
procedural sedation: endoscopy offices, office-based practices.
A4. Continue to publicize AzPANA events on our website and in our newsletter.
A5. Strive to continue providing well recognized, quality speakers and vendors for
each AzPANA and ASPAN conference.
A6. Re-establish the Phoenix / Northern Arizona Education Committee.
A7. Recruit membership for the education committee in Northern Arizona.
Goal B: Increase and retain membership.
Milestones:
- Membership application is available on the web site and all conferences.
- A link is provided in each newsletter for access to the membership application on the AzPANA website.
Strategies:
B1. Actively recruit new members and monitor renewals.
B2. Follow-up with conference attendees who are not AzPANA members to
encourage membership and future conference attendance.
B3. Host membership table at every educational opportunity.
B4. Keep current list of facilities.
B5. Continue with yearly AzPANA Recruiter of the Year award.
B6. Formulate survey for non-renewing members utilizing survey monkey.
Goal C: Increase member awareness and participation in governmental affairs.
Milestones:
- PAC News and website used to inform members of dates pertaining to state and national events involving governmental affairs.
- AzPana's Past President was a member of the ASPAN governmental affairs committee.
Strategies:
C1. Continue to inform membership of proposed legislation pertinent to nursing and
healthcare issues on the website and in the newsletter.
C2. Have AzPANA representation at both Annual Nurses Day at the Legislature and the Lobby Day at the State Capital.
C3. Have Governmental Affairs information at each AzPANA conference at the
membership table.
C4. Govt Affairs/AzSA liaison to have membership in ANA / AzNa.
C5. Budget for two members on the Board of Directors to attend Lobby Day at the
State capital and the Nurses Day at the State Legislature. If unable to attend
designate a committee chair/member to go.
C6. Have a speaker provide education on governmental affairs.
Goal D: Enhance leadership development program.
Milestones:
- ASPAN CDI in Maine (Sept 2009) attended by AzPANA President, Vice President and Secretary.
- Two AzPANA members were sent to the National Conference in New Orleans.
- AzPANA well represented on ASPAN National Committees (Jacque Crosson, Jeff Landau, Karen Clark, Sara Waldron, Ellen Poole).
- Willingness to Serve Form provided in all seminar packets and on the website.
- Multiple policies revised.
Strategies:
D1. Actively recruit potential board and committee members.
D2. Invite member attendance at all board meetings.
D3. Strive to send a minimum of two AzPANA board or committee members to annual ASPAN Component Development Institute (CDI) in Kentucky.
D4. Budget for Board members to receive free ASPAN / AzPANA membership dues based on active participation.
D5. Strive to send four board members to National Conference.
D6. Include Willingness to Serve Form in all seminar packets and on the website.
Goal E: Promote AzPANA in the community and professionally.
Milestones:
- AzPANA website continuously updated and professionally maintained.
- Solari bell donated for “silent auction” at ASPAN National Conference.
- Donation made to the ASPAN Foundation’s “Hail, Honor, and Salute” program on behalf of former AzPANA Treasurer Nancy Lahr (April 2010).
- Donation of $300 made to ASPAN for component sponsorship at National Conference.
- AzPANA Newsletter available to membership website.
- Donated $300 in Nancy O’Malley’s name to ASPAN Foundation’s “Hail, Honor, and Salute” program.
- PANAW week was recognized by sending a letter to all AzPANA members.
- PANAW Recognition letter sent to all board and committee members.
Strategies:
E1. Continue to promote AzPANA at ASPAN National Conference.
* Obtain “Silent Auction” donation.
* Obtain Component Night raffle item representative of AzPANA.
E2. Continue to promote our specialty during PANAW with mailings to members
and facilities.
E3. Collect donations for a charitable organization / cause at each conference.
E4. Make book donation to a chosen nursing program or perianesthesia unit
in the state annually.
E5. Continue to raffle free AzPANA/ASPAN membership during PANAW week.
Goal F: Promote scholarship and certification programs.
Milestones:
- Awarded six scholarships for recertification in past fiscal year.
- Awarded one scholarship for certification.
- Two certification review courses were held.
- Scholarships awarded to three AzPANA members to attend National Conference.
- Complimentary seminar awarded to each newly certified member.
- CPAN/CAPA Pins awarded to all newly certified members.
- As part of PANAW celebration each AzPANA member was awarded a certificate worth 2 scholarship points.
- Letter to award recipients for National Conference was rewritten.
Strategies:
F1. Promote certification / recertification scholarships.
F2. AzPANA scholarship information and forms will be made available at each
conference, on website, and in the Newsletter.
F3. Student nurse scholarship process and application forms available on website and
at conferences.
F4. Recognize and award pins to newly certified CPAN and CAPA members at each conference, in newsletter, and on website.
F5. Continue to reward each newly certified nurse who is an AzPANA member with one complimentary conference registration.
F6. Continue to offer certification review seminars.
F7. As part of PANAW celebration award each AzPANA member a certificate good
for 2 Scholarship Points.
F8. Clarify/update the point tracker form.

Goal G: Promote AzPANA / ASPAN / ABPANC award program.
Milestones:
- AzPANA Eileen F. Dalton Memorial President’s Award 2009-2010
Was awarded to Nancy Lahr.
- AzPANA Recruiter of the Year Award for 2009-10 presented to Karen Brennan.
- AzPANA applied for 2009-10 ASPAN Gold Leaf Award.
- AzPANA awarded ABPANC’s Shining Star Award for sixth consecutive year!
Strategies:
G1. Encourage nominations for AzPANA’s Eileen F. Dalton Memorial President’s
Award in newsletter, on website, and at conferences.
G2. Challenge members to compete for AzPANA/ASPAN Recruiter of the Year.
G3. Apply for ASPAN’s Gold Leaf Award in 2010-2011.
G4. Apply for ABPANC’s Shining Star Award in 2010-2011.
Goal H: Encourage evidence-based practice by promoting opportunities for
Research.
Milestones:
No milestones accomplished this year.
Strategies:
H1. Encourage and support any member wishing to obtain a research grant.
H2. Use newsletter, website, and communication at conferences to seek information on the
current research / QA activities of our members and to dispense the results of these
activities.
H3. Seek to continually promote and support the use of evidence-based practice in the
perianesthesia setting.
H4. Provided clinical/evidenced based articles in the Newsletter.
Goal I: Promote enhanced communication to AzPANA membership.
Strategies: (new goal this year)
I1. Publish quarterly newsletters on the website.
I2. Provide one printed edition of Newsletter yearly to facilities.
I3. Provide e-mail blast to membership when newsletter is available on website.
I4. Website communication to members will include updates regarding education, events, yearly calendar, Board of Director’s Roster, meeting minutes, and all pertinent information.
I5. Create a Directors Corner on the website for access by current Board of Directors and committee chairs. This will include policies and current forms.
